Running Trailrunning Ultrarunning

I’ve started so I’ll finish…

Running to the North Sea with my Northern Traverse pebble Early in the morning on Monday April 8 my Northern Traverse journey came to an end in Marske, about 4 miles west of Richmond. My back had totally given up, I had the ultra runners’ lean and I slowly and Read more…

NoT the Northern Traverse

Running through storm Kathleen, and some unfinished business…. This post will not end with the happy sound of my feet going over a finish line, or pictures of a medal. My first major ultra event of 2024, the Silva Northern Traverse, a non-stop race of 180 miles (in reality around Read more…

The Pendulum

Until I recced and ran the Montane Cheviot Goat last year I had never spent any time in the Cheviot hills, but in a short space of time I have come to really enjoy running in this beautiful and very remote area. With limited road access into the hills and Read more…

Cheviot Goat 2023

A wintry jaunt across the wildest place in England. No goats seen though. The Montane Cheviot Goat is a challenging winter ultra in the Cheviot hills of Northumberland, on the border with Scotland. The event website states this is the time of year when most livestock are brought off the Read more…

Marathon Eryri 2023

A Welsh mini-break with a bit of a run attached This was my fifth time running this wonderful race which has been staged since 1982. Having always had the double name ‘Snowdonia Marathon/Marathon Eryri’ the organisers have now dropped the English name and we are asked to refer to it Read more…

‘The Obstacle Is The Way’

Or how 2023 has not been all rainbows and unicorns I ran the CCC race, a 100km trail ultra from Courmayeur to Chamonix, on September 1st. The previous six months have been filled with training, with running many races, but also with two operations and subsequent recoveries. I wanted to Read more…

CCC 2023

Up and down for 100 km through Italy, Switzerland and France I travelled to the Chamonix Valley to run the CCC race (named after the towns at the start, middle and finish: Courmayeur, Champex, Chamonix), 100km with 6156m ascent . Sometimes called the ‘little sister of the UTMB’, the CCC Read more…

Six Dales Trail

Another splendid Punk Panther event The Six Dales Trail, an established and signposted 38 mile walking route from Otley to Middleham, was devised in 2010 by the Otley ‘Walkers are Welcome’ group. It takes its name from the six dales that are traversed as it makes its way across the Read more…

Hardwolds 40

Having run a lot of Punk Panther ultras I felt it was time to enter a Hardmoors event and see a bit more of the eastern side of Yorkshire. Their Hardwolds 40 race is approximately 47 miles (I call that value for money, as I understand it most of their Read more…

Solo 23 mile recce today from Osmotherley to Helms Solo 23 mile recce today from Osmotherley to Helmsley, the final section of the #hardmoors110 Taxi 🚕 back to my car. Expensive but it was worth checking this section out, as no doubt my brain will not be at its sharpest for these final miles on the actual event. Very sunny in contrast to yesterday’s dull day, but it was at times a tad warm for running. No particularly exciting features like Victorian funicular tramways, but I enjoyed looking at so many beautiful trees at their late spring best.

Lovely to have the company of @andy.407 who knows this stretch like the back of his hand and will be tackling the #hardmoors160 🏃‍♂️‍➡️💪💪 Makes me feel as if I am doing the fun run 😂 We ran from Saltburn-by-the-Sea to Kildale.
Hard to believe but I had never been to Saltburn, neither had I been up Roseberry Topping or seen Captain Cook’s Monument. The latter was a bit of a disappointment to be honest! Best just seen from afar perhaps.
Fab long weekend volunteering at the @scarpa @grea Fab long weekend volunteering at the @scarpa @greatlakeland3day by @oureaevents helping to look after around 500 runners at the event centre in Threlkeld and the overnight camp in St. John’s in the Vale. A lot of hard graft but a fab team to work with, great guidance from the permanent staff, and lots of insights gained into the nuts and bolts of the event. Plentiful nice chats with participants who all seemed very happy. Some downtime too and enjoyed a nice walk down to Thirlmere with some fellow volunteers. We were fed wonderfully well by the catering team, better food than I cook myself! Mostly sunny during the day but with a cold wind, thank goodness for the 4 insulated jackets I brought, and absolutely baltic at night 🥶 Should have taken my 4 season sleeping bag 🤦‍♀️
Well, I might even have a go at this event next year myself!

Which is more or less what I did. If you would like to read the full 7500 word low-down, or just look at some pretty pictures, the link is in my linktree in the bio.

It’s going to take a little time to process the It’s going to take a little time to process the experiences I had during the 92 hours it took me to ‘run’ from the Irish Sea to the North Sea on the brilliant @thenortherntraverse
About 200 of us set off on Saturday morning from St. Bees and I arrived in Robin Hood’s Bay on Wednesday at 5 am having covered 195 miles. No back pain, no lean, and last year’s DNF has been solidly put to bed now. Thanks to all the brilliant staff and volunteers from @oureaevents you were all just amazing, thanks to all my friends old and new on the trail, and to the home front supporting me with lots of messages of encouragement. There will be blog post with lots of nice pictures in due course, but first there are going to be a few days of eating 🥣 and sleeping 🛌
@thenortherntraverse #take2 After last year’s e @thenortherntraverse #take2
After last year’s event where I ground to a sorry halt in a field 4 miles outside of Richmond I am having another crack at this race. At least this time no uninvited named storms (I am talking about you Kathleen 💨)to keep us company. I am going to take it steady with plenty of stops in the hope that this time my back will hold out. Fingers crossed that strategy as well as all the strength training 🏋️‍♂️ will pay dividend and get me to Robin Hood’s Bay. Whatever happens I am planning to have a fab time on the trails!
New blog post alert 🚨 It’s only a short post New blog post alert 🚨 It’s only a short post compared to my usual (over) long writings, but then it was only a ‘short’ race 😂 50km, blink and it’s over and done. No mega packs to carry, no head torches, no sleep kit! The Hundred Hills 50k was my first @centurionrunning race and I loved 🥰 it! I shall be back for sure. Maybe something a little longer….😉 If you would like to have a read the link is in my link tree in the bio.

My very first @centurionrunning race! The #centuri My very first @centurionrunning race! The #centurionhundredhills 50k And ace it was too: lovely runnable and fully marked course with A LOT of hills (OK the uphills are not runnable), 5 checkpoints with super friendly volunteers, beautiful medal, and hot food at the finish. They had even laid on the weather ☀️ for us. 2nd F60 and sub 6:30, happy with that. Thanks to @jameselsonator and everyone at Centurion, I will be back for more!
