Hiking tales from an injured runner – part 2

Reacquainting myself with the Pennine Way My recent little backpacking trip along the Dales Way gave me a taste for more. I might as well get good use out of my new tent! I quickly decided that my next project could be a re-recce of parts of the Pennine Way Read more

God’s Own Backyard Ultra

A “backyard ultra” is a Last Person Standing ultra marathon format where runners complete a 4.167-mile loop (‘yard’) every hour, on the hour, until only one runner remains. The winner is the last runner to complete a lap, with all others having either stopped, or failed to finish a lap Read more

Centurion North Downs Way 100

A change is as good as a rest they say, and I think that applies to ultra running too. In the last two years I have spent a lot of time on the Pennine Way, the Coast to Coast, and the Cleveland Way. I have also done a couple of Read more

Hardmoors 110

The adjective ‘iconic’ can be overused. But I think the Hardmoors 110 (miles) race probably deserves this title. With 2025 staging its 18th edition, it started in 2008 as a small race with just 17 finishers. Ultra running was still very much a niche pursuit within the running community. As Read more

What came before I started running in 2007 but did not run my first marathon until 2015. My journey into ultra running started cautiously with a 28 mile local race in September 2021. I built up the distances over the next 12 months and a year later I ran the Read more

I can’t say I particularly wanted to come home, bu I can’t say I particularly wanted to come home, but at least Dover seemed to welcome me with a stunning sunrise. A quick snap taken on my way down to the car deck, but came out quite well I guess #nofilter #dover #whitecliffsofdover @dfdsfrance @dfdsglobal @portofdover
After leaving Châtel on Monday I spent 72 hours in After leaving Châtel on Monday I spent 72 hours in the @aletscharena_ch in Switzerland. It was rather a last minute decision, largely driven by a wish to stay at altitude due to ongoing heat in lower lying areas. The Auvergne, my initial plan, will have to wait 😉
And it was 💯 an excellent choice. The #aletschgletscher, Europe’s largest, left me speechless with wonder. The 360 views of the mountains include the Jungfrau, Matterhorn and Mont Blanc. The whole area is car free, you leave your car in the valley and use the cable car 🚡 to reach your accommodation, I had a lovely AirBnB. I stayed in #riederalp which lies at 1915m. Within a day you have forgotten you even have a car, it’s wonderful! I did 3 walks, you can make things easier by using cable cars to go up and/or down. Also managed two short runs, it’s quite hard work at that altitude.
I was sad to leave 😢

1. Aletsch glacier from the Bettmerhorn viewpoint
2+3. The Betterhorn mountain with its cable car station. I didn’t climb to the summit, it was described as needing a good head for heights and looked like something I didn’t need in my life.
4. Bettmeralp lake
5. Cows on the walk from Bettmeralp back to Riederalp
6. Info boards about the impact of climate change on the glacier
7. From the Moosfluh viewpoint
8. Grünsee in, almost, the bottom of the valley. It had been a long descent…
9. At Grünsee there were posts indicating where to sit on the rocks to have your picnic! I did as I was told.
10. View of the glacier from Silbersand
11+12. I treated myself to a beer at Villa Cassel after the Grünsee walk.
13. Looking down towards Riederalp. There were a lot of marmots there.
14. Obligatory selfie.

My fourth year in a row at the always brilliant @r My fourth year in a row at the always brilliant @run4adventure.uk Chamonix shakeout run, this year supported by @scottrunning (free bucket hats 🙏 Perhaps not my best look ever, but very handy for those hot sunny runs) and with @filmmyrun and @alpepperruns Great to see friends old and new, and catch up with Loyd and Liga who put lots of work into organising this event. Free ☕️ at @moodycoffeeroasters as always
PS in case you wonder: not racing here, I just made a 24hour visit to Chamonix and am already happily back in Châtel enjoying the peace and quiet.
It was always going to be a tall order to cover 10 It was always going to be a tall order to cover 100 miles, having been injured since late February. I cautiously returned to running in June but my longest run to date had only been 10k 😬. Lots of very long hikes done though, before you think I was totally insane to tackle the @centurionrunning North Downs Way 100 again. And the good news is that my knee held out and really didn’t cause me any great issues for the 55 miles I covered. Which bodes well going forward. Unfortunately the fierce heat 🔥 of the day and quite likely my undeniable lack of running fitness was too much for the rest of the body. My heart rate was too high really for what was a very easy pace. Despite cooling well (ice bandana 🧊 and SPF arm sleeves were brilliant) I suffered with dizziness 😵‍💫 and nausea from about 30 miles in, nothing new for me, but I just couldn’t get on top of things. I managed to leave the halfway checkpoint at Knockholt after a bit of a rocky time there 🤮, but decided to call it 5 miles later in Otford, rather than risk fainting on the trails, as I still felt awful.
With huge thanks to everyone at @centurionrunning Special mention must go to the volunteers 🦺 and the paramedic 🚑 at Knockholt who helped to get me back out of the door. And huge thanks to the lovely crew of a fellow runner who gave me a lift from Otford to Wrotham, and then another crew who took me all the way to the finish at Ashford to be reunited with my bags. Good to see the winners 🏆 come in on the track overnight, whilst I waited for the 1st train.
Lovely to meet @rywebb (who I recognised from Lakeland coverage) who was cheering us on at St. Martha’s and was very encouraging to us at the back of the pack! 245 started, 136 finished, 109 didn’t make it. Summer ultra racing is becoming very challenging 🥵🔥☀️

The re-recce of the @spinerace Challenger North ro The re-recce of the @spinerace Challenger North route continues. A few weeks ago I walked from Twice Brewed on Hadrian’s Wall to the end of the Pennine Way in Kirk Yetholm. This weekend it was time for the next section, Dufton to Twice Brewed, taking in Cross Fell in shorts and T-shirt conditions even on the summit 👍 and the endless Corpse Road down to Garrigill 👎. At Alston I restocked at the petrol station/Spar and sat outside on the pavement with a coffee and a reduced price hot cheese and onion pasty 🥧 Somehow petrol stations often become a weird kind of highlight for me on any ultra adventure. It rained when I was there, not a problem in itself but as I was to find out in the night there would be miles of long grass and woman-high bracken to traverse and this was all wet now. After a nice sunset near Slaggyford the short summer night turned out to be long and tedious. The miles in the dark over Lambley Common and Blenkinsopp Common were endless and did not spark any joy. Plenty of low moments, but that’s good ultra practice. Only consolation: it wasn’t as boggy as normal. I was pleased to reach Greenhead and had another break in the Walltown toilets, IYKYK. When I came out of there I could put my head torch away and go onto the wonderful Hadrian’s Wall, and all was well with the world once more. Cold and overcast, but the clouds briefly parted at 5 am to allow me a glimpse of the sunrise. I held a gate open for a fell runner out for a morning run, the first person I had seen since Slaggyford. Coming off the wall at Steel Rigg I walked down to try my luck at the @twicebrewedinn It had just gone 7 and I asked if they would do breakfast for a non-resident. The answer was yes and boy did that make me happy 😋🤩 They were hugely welcoming and I enjoyed my veggie full English 🍳 I did confuse them a bit saying I had walked 50 miles from Appleby station! So where did you sleep? Umm, I didn’t. (I carried sleeping bag, mat, bivi bag so could have bivied out). Walked the 2 miles to Bardon Mill station, home just after lunch in time for a siesta 😉. Just Hardraw to Dufton left to cover sometime before January….

A month ago I hiked the Dales Way from Ilkley to Bowness-on-Windermere. Mainly out of frustration at not being able to run. I had a grand time despite some less than brilliant weather. My first backpacking trip in many years, decades even. I wrote a little blog post about it too, 🔗 in bio.
There will be a part 2 🔜 , featuring a return to the Pennine Way.
