‘The Obstacle Is The Way’

Or how 2023 has not been all rainbows and unicorns I ran the CCC race, a 100km trail ultra from Courmayeur to Chamonix, on September 1st. The previous six months have been filled with training, with running many races, but also with two operations and subsequent recoveries. I wanted to Read more

CCC 2023

Up and down for 100 km through Italy, Switzerland and France I travelled to the Chamonix Valley to run the CCC race (named after the towns at the start, middle and finish: Courmayeur, Champex, Chamonix), 100km with 6156m ascent . Sometimes called the ‘little sister of the UTMB’, the CCC Read more

Six Dales Trail

Another splendid Punk Panther event The Six Dales Trail, an established and signposted 38 mile walking route from Otley to Middleham, was devised in 2010 by the Otley ‘Walkers are Welcome’ group. It takes its name from the six dales that are traversed as it makes its way across the Read more

Hardwolds 40

Having run a lot of Punk Panther ultras I felt it was time to enter a Hardmoors event and see a bit more of the eastern side of Yorkshire. Their Hardwolds 40 race is approximately 47 miles (I call that value for money, as I understand it most of their Read more

Dales High Way

The Dales High Way (DHW) is a Punk Panther (PP) ultra event along the long distance walking route of the same name, which roughly runs parallel to the Settle and Carlisle Railway. 90 miles and 14,600 ft of ascent take you from Saltaire to Appleby-in-Westmorland via Skipton, Settle, Dent and Read more

The need for speed

Some thoughts on speed work, training volume, and results on the road….. Ultra running is fun, right? No emphasis on pace, mile splits, Strava segments. You can run slowly, you can walk the hills. Well, if you get really tired you can even walk the flats too and still no Read more

Welcome Way 50 mile ultra

With all to play for in mile 49….. The Welcome Way is an existing way-marked circular long distance walking route here in West Yorkshire, connecting Otley, Burley in Wharfedale and Baildon, with an optional loop around Shipley Glen and Bingley. Not only is it local to me, the route actually Read more

The Nationals

Taking part in the English National Cross Country Championships has been one of the highlights of every running year for me since I joined my running club Ilkley Harriers. February Fun

Dewsbury: another crack at a 10k PB In December I wrote a post about breaking 50 minutes for the 10k after running 49:32 at Ribble Valley. The Dewsbury 10k, always held on the first Sunday in February, offered a good opportunity to try and shave a few more seconds off. Read more

3 weeks ago I ran the @nav4adventure Lady Anne’s Way 75 mile race from Skipton to Appleby. When I say ‘ran’ that should not be taken too literally….there was an awful lot of slipping, sliding and slithering involved. You could say it was ‘a little muddy underfoot’. And rain ☔️ overhead. It didn’t look like the photograph that’s for sure! That one is from the recce. Still, it’s an event I would really recommend. Have a read and see if you could be tempted to have a go at this lovely low-key race in one of the most beautiful bits of England. Link 🔗 in bio.

A great bunch of us @ilkleyharriers ❤️💚 hiked, jogged, ran or cycled up and down from @lastazioneilkley to Keighley Gate. Each loop is 4 miles and over 900ft of ascent. This whole venture in support of the wonderful @shaunna.burke who is living with incurable cancer and is set to climb Everest again, having first done so in 2005. I went up and down to the Gate 8 times today, nothing too extraordinary for an ultra runner, but I can assure it was getting a bit painful towards the end 😖 as it’s all pretty steep. Any donations to this wonderful cause very much welcome! 🙏

A week ago today I set out on the brilliant @centurionrunning #winterdowns100 race. It felt tough at the time, but I had a pretty good race really (especially looking back 😉). Read all about it, as usual it’s quite long as I like to ramble on a bit….feel free to just look at the fabulous pictures instead!

People often ask me why I run long ultras that go People often ask me why I run long ultras that go through the night. Sunsets, sunrises and the peace of night running are always the ingredients that come to mind first. And on this weekend’s @centurionrunning #winterdowns100 ❄️ we were lucky with some spectacular displays on either side of the long 16 hour night. I don’t often take pics on a race but this time I had to make an exception.

Recceing (most of) next month’s @centurionrunning Recceing (most of) next month’s @centurionrunning #winterdowns100 For 3 days I ran/walked/jeffed/shuffled from Amberley to Farnham, staying overnight in Buriton and New Alresford on the way. I travelled along the #southdownsway #wayfarerswalk and #stswithunsway The November weather was kind to me, mild and without much of a breeze, just a bit dull. Lovely autumn colours 🍂 🍁 I checked out all the water taps 🚰 en route, seeing there will only be 3 check points. There are plenty of taps! Not that I drink much in winter anyway. Logistics made easy by excellent rail 🚂 connections. Looking forward to the race 🏃‍♀️🏁
