Centurion North Downs Way 100

A change is as good as a rest they say, and I think that applies to ultra running too. In the last two years I have spent a lot of time on the Pennine Way, the Coast to Coast, and the Cleveland Way. I have also done a couple of Read more

Hardmoors 110

The adjective ‘iconic’ can be overused. But I think the Hardmoors 110 (miles) race probably deserves this title. With 2025 staging its 18th edition, it started in 2008 as a small race with just 17 finishers. Ultra running was still very much a niche pursuit within the running community. As Read more

Centurion Hundred Hills 50k

Over the last 12 months I have spent a lot of time on the Pennine Way, either recceing the route or ‘racing’. I ran the Spine Challenger South in June and the Spine Challenger North (minus the last 7 miles 😥) in January. I basically covered the whole of the Read more

What came before I started running in 2007 but did not run my first marathon until 2015. My journey into ultra running started cautiously with a 28 mile local race in September 2021. I built up the distances over the next 12 months and a year later I ran the Read more

December: blowin’ in the wind

A round up of the final month of 2024 where I had three events on three stormy days with yellow weather warnings: the Punk Panther Christmas Cracker in a named storm (Darragh) on the 7th, a ‘Run like a Haggis’ navigation course on a ‘standard windy day’ on the 15th, Read more

Autumn adventures: racing in Wales and shuffling to Scotland

Marathon Eryri – 26 Oct 2024 I travelled to Llanberis for my sixth time running Marathon Eryri (the English version of the name, ‘Snowdonia Marathon’ was dropped in 2023). It was the 40th staging of this iconic race and the Welsh weather obligingly showed its best face, giving us dry Read more

3 weeks ago I ran the @nav4adventure Lady Anne’s Way 75 mile race from Skipton to Appleby. When I say ‘ran’ that should not be taken too literally….there was an awful lot of slipping, sliding and slithering involved. You could say it was ‘a little muddy underfoot’. And rain ☔️ overhead. It didn’t look like the photograph that’s for sure! That one is from the recce. Still, it’s an event I would really recommend. Have a read and see if you could be tempted to have a go at this lovely low-key race in one of the most beautiful bits of England. Link 🔗 in bio.

A great bunch of us @ilkleyharriers ❤️💚 hiked, jogged, ran or cycled up and down from @lastazioneilkley to Keighley Gate. Each loop is 4 miles and over 900ft of ascent. This whole venture in support of the wonderful @shaunna.burke who is living with incurable cancer and is set to climb Everest again, having first done so in 2005. I went up and down to the Gate 8 times today, nothing too extraordinary for an ultra runner, but I can assure it was getting a bit painful towards the end 😖 as it’s all pretty steep. Any donations to this wonderful cause very much welcome! 🙏

People often ask me why I run long ultras that go People often ask me why I run long ultras that go through the night. Sunsets, sunrises and the peace of night running are always the ingredients that come to mind first. And on this weekend’s @centurionrunning #winterdowns100 ❄️ we were lucky with some spectacular displays on either side of the long 16 hour night. I don’t often take pics on a race but this time I had to make an exception.

Recceing (most of) next month’s @centurionrunning Recceing (most of) next month’s @centurionrunning #winterdowns100 For 3 days I ran/walked/jeffed/shuffled from Amberley to Farnham, staying overnight in Buriton and New Alresford on the way. I travelled along the #southdownsway #wayfarerswalk and #stswithunsway The November weather was kind to me, mild and without much of a breeze, just a bit dull. Lovely autumn colours 🍂 🍁 I checked out all the water taps 🚰 en route, seeing there will only be 3 check points. There are plenty of taps! Not that I drink much in winter anyway. Logistics made easy by excellent rail 🚂 connections. Looking forward to the race 🏃‍♀️🏁
