The Pig on the Hill Backyard Ultra

Having done quite a number of ultra races since I got into ‘the long stuff’ three years ago, the idea of trying a backyard ultra took hold a while ago. For those unfamiliar with the concept: the backyard ultra is a form of ultra marathon race where competitors must consecutively Read more

I’ve started so I’ll finish…

Running to the North Sea with my Northern Traverse pebble Early in the morning on Monday April 8 my Northern Traverse journey came to an end in Marske, about 4 miles west of Richmond. My back had totally given up, I had the ultra runners’ lean and I slowly and Read more

NoT the Northern Traverse

Running through storm Kathleen, and some unfinished business…. This post will not end with the happy sound of my feet going over a finish line, or pictures of a medal. My first major ultra event of 2024, the Silva Northern Traverse, a non-stop race of 180 miles (in reality around Read more

The Pendulum

Until I recced and ran the Montane Cheviot Goat last year I had never spent any time in the Cheviot hills, but in a short space of time I have come to really enjoy running in this beautiful and very remote area. With limited road access into the hills and Read more

CCC 2023

Up and down for 100 km through Italy, Switzerland and France I travelled to the Chamonix Valley to run the CCC race (named after the towns at the start, middle and finish: Courmayeur, Champex, Chamonix), 100km with 6156m ascent . Sometimes called the ‘little sister of the UTMB’, the CCC Read more

Six Dales Trail

Another splendid Punk Panther event The Six Dales Trail, an established and signposted 38 mile walking route from Otley to Middleham, was devised in 2010 by the Otley ‘Walkers are Welcome’ group. It takes its name from the six dales that are traversed as it makes its way across the Read more

Hardwolds 40

3 weeks ago I ran the @nav4adventure Lady Anne’s Way 75 mile race from Skipton to Appleby. When I say ‘ran’ that should not be taken too literally….there was an awful lot of slipping, sliding and slithering involved. You could say it was ‘a little muddy underfoot’. And rain ☔️ overhead. It didn’t look like the photograph that’s for sure! That one is from the recce. Still, it’s an event I would really recommend. Have a read and see if you could be tempted to have a go at this lovely low-key race in one of the most beautiful bits of England. Link 🔗 in bio.

A great bunch of us @ilkleyharriers ❤️💚 hiked, jogged, ran or cycled up and down from @lastazioneilkley to Keighley Gate. Each loop is 4 miles and over 900ft of ascent. This whole venture in support of the wonderful @shaunna.burke who is living with incurable cancer and is set to climb Everest again, having first done so in 2005. I went up and down to the Gate 8 times today, nothing too extraordinary for an ultra runner, but I can assure it was getting a bit painful towards the end 😖 as it’s all pretty steep. Any donations to this wonderful cause very much welcome! 🙏

A week ago today I set out on the brilliant @centurionrunning #winterdowns100 race. It felt tough at the time, but I had a pretty good race really (especially looking back 😉). Read all about it, as usual it’s quite long as I like to ramble on a bit….feel free to just look at the fabulous pictures instead!

People often ask me why I run long ultras that go People often ask me why I run long ultras that go through the night. Sunsets, sunrises and the peace of night running are always the ingredients that come to mind first. And on this weekend’s @centurionrunning #winterdowns100 ❄️ we were lucky with some spectacular displays on either side of the long 16 hour night. I don’t often take pics on a race but this time I had to make an exception.

Recceing (most of) next month’s @centurionrunning Recceing (most of) next month’s @centurionrunning #winterdowns100 For 3 days I ran/walked/jeffed/shuffled from Amberley to Farnham, staying overnight in Buriton and New Alresford on the way. I travelled along the #southdownsway #wayfarerswalk and #stswithunsway The November weather was kind to me, mild and without much of a breeze, just a bit dull. Lovely autumn colours 🍂 🍁 I checked out all the water taps 🚰 en route, seeing there will only be 3 check points. There are plenty of taps! Not that I drink much in winter anyway. Logistics made easy by excellent rail 🚂 connections. Looking forward to the race 🏃‍♀️🏁
